The English Premier League 2022/23 season has commenced with full gear and clubs are beginning to know their mission for the season.
Some clubs will aim to maintain their Premier status while others are gunning for the title. Some will target the UEFA champions league spots while others will aim for the Europa League and European conference league.
The Premier League 2022/23 season promises to be fun, so let’s take a look at the five things to expect from the English Premier League this season.
1. Nunez — Haaland Rivalry
This is the first thing to expect in the league throughout this campaign. Darwin Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica for £85m this summer. He has hit the ground running for the Merseyside club after recording two goals and 1 assist in two competitive matches (including the community shield triumph over Manchester City)
Haaland, on the other hand, joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund this summer. The prolific attacker is tipped to be a success in the Premier League following his impressive goalscoring record.
The two much-discussed and highly-rated stars face off in the community shield and it was Nunez who took the day with an inspiring performance.
The Uruguayan star came off the bench to win a penalty kick which Mohamed Salah converted. Darwin scored his debut goal for the Reds to make it 3-1. While Nunez enjoyed his debut, Haaland’s debut was a forgettable one as he missed some goalscoring opportunities.
However, the 20-year-old Norwegian attacker has since put the disappointment behind him as he was lively throughout the first League game against West Ham.
He scored two goals to help the Cityzens begin their title defence on a bright note.
Nunez also continued from where he stopped as he was involved in the two goals scored by Liverpool in their hard-fought 2-2 draw against newly-promoted Fulham.
With three goals and one assist between both players, we expect fans to compare them as the season progresses.
2. A Lively And Playmaking Gabriel Jesus
We all know Gabriel Jesus is a centre-forward but we saw a different player against Crystal Palace in the season opener.
The former Manchester City star was full of energy throughout the encounter. He created lots of chances for his teammates and he took up the playmaking role at a point in the game.
He looked reborn and confident during the game which showed in his impressive overall performance.
Though it’s still very much early to conclude, I think fans should expect more assists and goals from the 20-year-old Brazilian who joined Arsenal from Manchester City this summer.
3. Nottingham Forest To Be Involved In Relegation Battle
Everyone tips Nottingham Forest to be involved in a relegation battle owing to their inexperience in the country’s top-flight League.
Having returned to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years, Steve Cooper’s priority is to avoid the drop at the end of the campaign.
Unfortunately, their first game wasn’t encouraging following a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.
Though they showed massive resilience and determination against the Magpies, the Tricky Trees need more than resolute defending to stay up.
They must create chances and score goals. The attack led by Jesse Lingard must be prolific enough to convert every chance that comes their way.
Meanwhile, Steve Cooper will count on his record signing Taiwo Awoniyi to produce the needed goals all through the campaign.
4. Bitter-sweet Season For Manchester United
Manchester United fans expect much from their beloved team this season following an impressive pre-season campaign.
However, the opening 2-1 defeat to Brighton has somewhat reduced their enthusiasm and trust in Ten Haag’s men.
As much as the season is still young, football fans and pundits should expect a bitter-sweet campaign from the Red Devils.
Will the Old Trafford outfits qualify for next season’s Champions League? Well, only time will tell.
5. Intense Competition For The Title
The race for last season’s Premier League title went down the wire as we waited till the final day to know the Champions.
Fans should expect some classical showings from Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea this season.
Though Liverpool started with a draw, Jurgen Klopp’s men know how to play catch-up games when necessary.
Manchester City and Chelsea started brightly with wins against West Ham and Everton respectively. Both clubs will challenge for the title this season.
Tottenham are always inconsistent in the title race, Antonio Conte might turn things around for the Lilywhites this season.
Hence, we tipped the Tottenham stadium outfits as one of the title contenders.
